9:34 am

playing on the football team. look, regardless of the sport, the point is for us as parents is to be super engaged with our kids. and, you know, sports is a big way to do that. certainly if you have the ability and the time to coach, this is a drive. mark and his wife, liz have made hundreds of times from their home to saint ignatius. we're not only his kids go to school, but he went to high school. i'm a dad. first period, and if you ask me, what's the most important thing i do in life? what's the thing i enjoying doing the most in life? it's being a dad stepping back onto his old stomping grounds, he's reminded of his time playing football on the very field. he watches his son jack play today. playing on the field that i played on and going to some of the same classrooms. absolutely. it's bizarre you know, honestly, it's just a source of pride in our kids that they're they're doing their own things. they're much better athletes than i ever was, without a doubt probably got it from their mom. sports and parenting go hand in hand in the feral house,

9:35 am

coaching his kids both on and off the field. and for mark, those lessons can be seen in his schools as candidate for mayor. if we're going to bring our city back, if we're going to restore all the things and fix all the things that are our issues right now, we have to be honest about where we sit to really have a sustained path forward. and leadership is a big part of that. and taking that from the athletic field to city hall it's a very natural extension. it's an extension, he has made before his interim mayor in 2017, and after eight years of watching from the sidelines he's hoping to get back into the political field but for mark, it's his family, he says. that's brought him this far. but a family you know, is such a big part of our lives and a big part of my life. and like i said, nobody's perfect. our children aren't. i'm not. but really proud of who they are as human beings. more than anything else. and again if that's the one thing i do in life it's helped be a great

9:37 am

jeremiah o'brien was launched in 1943, it became one of 2700 liberty ships that transported men and material to the war in europe with a crew of 56, they were constantly under threat from swarms of german u-boats trying to sink them, and the o'brien was front and center delivering troops to omaha beach on d-day. >this ship was right between the texas and the augusta, a cruiser, and they were shelling the beach. you know, the emplacements on the beach. and so they were right in the thick of it. there's a hole on the starboard gunnel from a shell and dents in the hull from the landing boats slamming into the sides on that day, john eaton, the ship's chief engineer says you can feel the history as you roam the narrow passageways. >everywhere you walk here, you're walking in the footsteps of people who have lived it for real you know? so if you think you're having a bad day, just think about it. you know going to sea. and when they're shooting at you. but there is something very special about this floating museum. it can still sail. one

9:38 am

of only two liberty ships in the entire country that can make that claim. its mighty steam engines still work, taking visitors out onto the bay during fleet week cruises. >i like to tell people that, you know, you're on one of america's most historic vessels. this is the only ship operating that was part of the d-day invasion in 1944. so. and as operating ships, i think you are this is the most historic operating ship in the united states. but to do that requires a lot of maintenance and safety regulations. and as a result money. and that's where the problem lies >we've never recovered in terms of visitors like we had prior to the pandemic. we're basically getting about 35% of the visitor numbers that we had prior to 2020. the reality is to keep this ship as an operating memorial to world war two veterans is we will need that money. there's just no way around it so the ship's keepers have put out an urgent appeal to the community. they're

9:39 am

asking for donations and for more people to visit they say it didn't help that in the midst of the pandemic, a massive fire at the port caused the ship to have to move to pier 35. it's not far. just on the other side of pier 39, but many visitors simply don't see it as they pass by. but the loss of revenue has all but dried up. the nonprofit savings, and within a few months they will be out of money >to think that it would stop operating, especially considering everything that it represents. the history our world war two veterans unimaginable that this ship. we >need help and our you know, our hearts and hands are open. we need help. we need to preserve this piece of american history. ships were cut up and scrapped for their steel. they don't think that would happen to the o'brien, but it would be hard for those who have worked so hard to keep the old girl sailing to see her engine silenced, tied up to a dock never to move again. >gianna>well if you'd like to donate or want more information, we have a link to

numbers. a group of women took a big step towards future careers in law enforcement. here's max darrow reporter a good stretch essential as more than 20 women get on track towards careers in law enforcement these women are now graduates of the san mateo county sheriff's office women's boot camp. it was a big moment for nicole jacobs. >i feel empowered, i feel strong, and i'm ready to continue this journey. the primary goal of the program to help prepare women for the necessary physical agility test required to enter law enforcement. >but >>sheriff christina corpuz says it's bigger than >that. this boot camp has really helped these women with the confidence that they could do it. you know, you could be a mom and be a law enforcement officer this program has really helped women believe in themselves. corpus started the boot camp back in 2014. she says the sheriff's department has ended up hiring more than 25 graduates over the years.

>women are really important to have in law enforcement. we bring, you know, a compassion. we bring a lot of strength, and it's we just we need more women in law enforcement. the san mateo county sheriff's office has joined the 30 by 30 initiative, aiming to get their recruit classes to be 30% women by 2030. >i'm really hopeful to see them join, the sheriff's office i want to help people. jacobs now feels like she's a step closer to being able to do that. >this is the best thing i've ever decided to do a new path she's ready to pursue >gianna>well, different generations from baby boomers to gen z, are changing the shape of the workforce. each generation has its own values, habits, and points of view. but finding that common ground may not be as hard as you think. a pew research center report reveals that millennials born between 1981 and 1996 now make up a larger share of the workforce at 35%, surpassing older gen x workers, who make

lot of businesses. i know that a lot of times, you know, in my experience and in others, you know, other business owners that i speak to is that it's always the loudest voice in the room that gets heard. and so really, it comes back to us as leaders to be able to allow everyone at the table to have a voice and an opinion. and there isn't just one voice that matters, right? so it's getting back to communication and engagement, which seems very fundamental, but it's something that's lacking in a lot of organizations. >gianna>yeah. and just that understanding of where each other are coming from so technology to julie is constantly evolving in the workforce how can companies leverage the tech savviness of, say, those younger generations while valuing experiences of older employees >live>yeah, this is a this is a great one. so what i will tell you is technology is allowing us to do a lot of work much faster, right. and more convenient places. however, what i will tell you is technology cannot replace experience and when you are in front of a client and you're in front of a boardroom, technology isn't going to help

you do that presentation. any better. so, you know, i encourage companies to use a blend of both use technology to take some of the the building blocks you know, and move them forward faster but don't forget to teach your employees the meaning behind it. and understanding what their work means. >gianna>yeah, and i think you said it earlier communication and just understanding. you know, this next generation coming in with a completely different perspective of just out of a global pandemic. so appreciate all your insight. julie. thank you so much for spending some time with us. this morning. >live>thanks for having me it's been a beautiful labor day weekend and heading into this afternoon. we have very similar weather to what we've had the past couple days, meaning 70 near san francisco, across the bay bridge in oakland. partly cloudy skies to kick off the morning we see a lot more sunshine though into the afternoon hours and we'll see plenty of warmth off into those inland spots like upper 80s near antioch and concord. this afternoon. low 80s stretching up into santa rosa, matched up with the santa clara valley, actually also sitting in the low 80s today near san

jose. but let's use the santa clara valley as an example real fast. we have some big changes right around the corner heading into the next couple of days those 80s you see below me. and for the past couple of days in those inland spots, it's going to warm up into triple digit weather right around the corner. here's what's happening. high pressure is moving in from our inland spots, and it's going to heat us up fast within the next couple of days. we keep a very close eye on our heat risk map, especially in areas like solano county stretching all the way down into the santa clara valley, where upper 90s and triple digit weather starts tomorrow within the next 24 hours. that lasts into our wednesday forecast thursday. we're seeing a similar trend too so let's take a look at those numbers. heading over into our next seven days. we really keep a close eye on those inland spots, especially because many people are going back to work and back to school tomorrow. those kiddos with any outdoor activities they have or recess or after school activities they're going to be battling this triple digit weather. so parents maybe it's a good idea to take them out for the next couple of days or find an indoor activity to kind of replace all that excitement that they have, especially in those afternoon hours after

school. now, once we head into this weekend, that's when the weather starts to get a little bit more average. we're back into the 90s just by saturday 80s, as we head into our sunday forecast with partly cloudy skies and speaking of 80s and 90s, that's the forecast throughout the next couple of days for our friends along the bay. we're talking about berkeley over into oakland 90s tomorrow, 80s into wednesday's forecast. we also get that relief in sight right around the corner as we head into our weekend setup. upper 70s by friday, holding on tight to a similar forecast into early next week >gianna>jessica thank you. pacifica the hot spot for a pretty cool view. people flocking to the beach town to spot the largest mammals in the world. that's still ahead
