Kirk shot 6-under-par 64 early in the first round on Thursday, a shot better than Hideki Matsuyama, Taylor Pendrith and Matthieu Pavon.
Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are lurking at 4-under, with Rory McIlroy at 2-under after a round-finishing birdie on the 18th hole.
