Wednesday Is Purple Heart Day across America, and one northern New York community is taking part in honoring those who have served their country.The Town of Plattsburgh and the Clinton County American Legion are holding a Purple Heart Day ceremony for the first time on Wednesday at the Battlefield Memorial Gateway.John Rock, American Legion Post 1619, expressed the significance of the park in honoring veterans. "This park has been a symbol of their honor and sacrifices that they made in their service of this country. So, this year was a very, very monumental of the year," said Rock.Purple Heart Day honors service members who were wounded or killed while serving in the military. Wednesday's ceremony included a walk on the park's Purple Heart Trail.Gregory Lee, a Vietnam veteran from Peru and Purple Heart recipient, emphasized that there are all kinds of heroes in the military. "I mean, I'm proud of it, but it doesn't make you a hero. You hear that and it's not so. The heroes are the 17 buddies that lost their lives during my time with my unit," said Lee.With the North Country having a large presence of service members, town leaders stress the importance of honoring all veterans beyond Purple Heart Day.Michael Cashman, Town Supervisor of Plattsburgh, remarked on the ongoing commitment to veterans. "It is a commitment that we have, and we are renewing here. But we must do it every day. We remember those sacrifices by our hometown heroes," said Cashman.
